You can wear booties to clean hardwood

No, not those booties…these ones:

As featured on Amazon.it (left – yes, you can buy them!), and on DonnaClick.it (right, with a stylish peep-toe, bow-bedecked version for the ladies).

This is a thing. A cleaning product that blends Italian love of fashion, hygiene, and … efficiency? I remember going to visit friends on a Saturday, only to find one of them scoot-scoot-scooching up to the door, smiling and wearing a version of these, while the other ladies of the house were blissfully gliding about in pairs of their own. I can only imagine the satisfaction of the soft swish-swish of microfiber over hardwood or parquet (imagination being required as I – full disclosure – have never tried these on.)

But we American home-makers (whether full or part-time) can feel that same sense of satisfaction – in keeping with our organized, Italian-style weekend getaway – by following one simple rule:

Clean your house before you hit the road

Easy as that. Italian women always seem to have the bed made, and the bathroom counters freshly wiped down (more on that later). I highly recommend this before a weekend trip, so that when you return you can have a relaxing Sunday evening.

Top Five Cleaning Steps before a Weekend Trip:

  1. Tidy (clear clothes to laundry, make bed)
  2. Take out trash
  3. Vacuum (mopping optional)
  4. Wipe down bathrooms (even a quick once-over with vinegar spray)
  5. Wipe kitchen counters, run dishwasher

Make it a 30-min cleaning blitz, nothing intensive. Just enough to build anticipation for your trip, and to make for a happier rientro as the Italians call it (sounds like a return from space!).

After all, sometimes the best part of your weekend getaway is traveling back home. Made all the sweeter by crisply laundered linens, scrubbed kitchen, and freshly vacuumed floors. (Bootie-buffing optional).
